Nokia's burning platform

It is one of the most combustible and gripping documents ever to emerge from a major corporation. When I first saw the leaked memo from Stephen Elop, the Nokia chief executive recruited from Microsoft last year, I had some doubts about its authenticity. After all, it looked far too frank and well-written to have been penned by a corporate boss.

Stephen Elop

But now we've confirmed that the document first published by Engadget is the real thing - and that means Friday's event where the Nokia boss will unveil his strategy for the ailing mobile giant will be even more eagerly anticipated.

For the past few months, fans of the Finnish business and its phones have been insisting that its troubles have been overstated. They dismiss the idea that Apple or Google have transformed the mobile industry and say it would be madness for Nokia to ditch the Symbian operating system or the newer MeeGo project in favour of either Android or Microsoft's Windows Phone 7.

Now it is clear that Stephen Elop profoundly disagrees with that analysis. He tells his colleagues that their company is like a man standing on a burning North Sea oil platform and must decide whether to plunge into icy waters or perish. He is brutally frank about Nokia's failure to keep up:

"While competitors poured flames on our market share, what happened at Nokia? We fell behind, we missed big trends, and we lost time."

Here he is on the challenge from Apple and Google:

"The first iPhone shipped in 2007, and we still don't have a product that is close to their experience. Android came on the scene just over 2 years ago, and this week they took our leadership position in smartphone volumes. Unbelievable."

Ah, but surely Nokia is handily placed to dominate the developing markets where its cheaper phones have been grabbing a hefty share of the market? No comfort there from Mr Elop either:

"At the lower-end price range, Chinese OEMs are cranking out a device much faster than, as one Nokia employee said only partially in jest, "the time that it takes us to polish a PowerPoint presentation." They are fast, they are cheap, and they are challenging us."

So what's the answer - MeeGo? The CEO says the joint venture with Intel is an example of the great innovation still going on within Nokia, but it's much too slow to get products out - "at this rate, by the end of 2011 we might have only one MeeG product in the market." As for Symbian, the operating system which once ruled the smartphone universe, it is proving to be "an increasingly difficult environment to work in."

Which all begs the question - what is Mr Elop's plan to get Nokia off the burning platform, and does it involve climbing aboard someone else's rig? He does say that the new battlefield is not devices but ecosystems which bring everything from apps to advertising to developers together, and "we're going to have to decide how we either build, catalyse or join an ecosystem".

So does that mean that on Friday Nokia will announce that Symbian and MeeGo are dead and it will henceforth be developing phones using the Windows Phone 7 system - or even the open-source Android? That sounds far too radical - after all, huge amounts of cash and time have been poured into development work.

But now that the Canadian CEO has lobbed a hand grenade into the quiet, understated culture of Finland's mobile giant, all bets are off.

PS. I had mistakenly called Mr Elop American when he is in fact Canadian. This has now been corrected above.

Here we go loopty loop

I?ve been wondering lately what it is about loops (in computer programs) that is so hard for students to get their heads around. A college professor was telling me (back a while ago but it stuck with me) that they had assigned a program to print out the words to The Twelve Days of Christmas and had explicitly asked student to use loops. And when you think about it this is a natural for loops because of all the repetition. A good number (or bad depending on point of view) had actually submitted solutions without loops. Some of these students had previously taken and passed Advanced Placement Computer Science in high school! What?s up with that?

Clearly it is not lazy. using loops is the way lazy people would do it. (Though I like to think that there is a fine line between lazy and efficient at times) No, students had used cut and paste and a lot of typing to do this all inline.

Now loops are something we do without thinking all the time. Climbing stairs is a while loop. Think about it ? we repeat the same step motions until we get to the top or bottom of the stairs. We check, usually with our eyes, to see when we are there and then change our motions. We?ve all seen what happens when people don?t check haven?t we? Blind people climbing familiar steps memorize the number of steps and effectively execute a for/next loop to do the same thing. Eating is the same. We keep putting food in our mouth until either we are full or we run out of food which ever comes first.

And yet all too often students fail to see how programming syntax allows them to do the same things in a program. I don?t get it.

Loops of course are all the same in programming. Oh the syntax is different for different types of loops and in different programming languages but basically they have the same components.

  1. Setting initial conditions
  2. Changing conditions
  3. Checking to see if the condition has changed such that the loop should terminate

In the middle somewhere useful work happens ? giving the benefit of the doubt.

Here is a Small Basic example

For i = 1 To 10 ' Set initial conditions
  t = t + i   ' pretend this is useful
EndFor ' change the value of i and see if we are done

Here is a C# while loop

TwoWord = "ABC"; // Set an initial condition
do
{
    TwoWord = Console.ReadLine();   // Change the condition
}
while (TwoWord.CompareTo("exit") == 1); // See if the ending condition is met
I think students get how loops work. Really I do. I think if you asked a student to explain the components of a loop they could do it. But translating that knowledge to a specific problem seems to be harder. I don?t know why. I hear this sort of story (students struggling with using loops) from teachers all the time. There are other aspects of programming that students also struggle with the application. Arrays for example seem to be a struggle for many. Far too often I hear stories of students having variables like A1, A2, ? A10 when a simple array would be much more efficient.

Concepts are easier than applications of those concepts. Problem solving of new problems is harder than applying old algorithms to well known problems. What?s the answer? How do you deal with this? Or don?t you see it with your students? If not, what is your secret?

Blog Post: The State of Axum

Those who have followed this blog will have noticed that it?s been a long time since we posted anything new about Axum, and the time has come to state publicly that which may have been clear to some but not others, that we?re not currently pursuing productization.

We have seriously examined the possibility of releasing the source code under an OSS license, but that, too, will require time that we don?t have that much of. At this time, no one is assigned paid hours to work on Axum, but we are still entertaining fantasies about an open-source release sometime in the future by doing some extra work during down times.

That said, the incubation effort was very successful in our opinion: several of the concepts embodied in Axum live on in the next versions of C# and .NET: C# and VB will support their own form of asynchronous methods, while .NET is adding support for data-flow constructs following the patterns we set up in Axum and the C++ concurrency runtime.

On the other hand, the concepts around safe parallelism and agent-based programming were seen by many as too far outside the mainstream to be adopted now in languages like C# and VB. The idea of Axum was to not force these concepts on general-purpose languages, so those of us who have work on Axum are not surprised.

It?s disappointing to have to post this kind of entry, but it?s better to acknowledge the situation than to stick our heads in the sand and pretend that everything?s OK.

Fisker Karma enters production on March 21st, our future shortly thereafter

It's been a long road for the Karma to reach production, but now it finally has an end in sight: March 21st. That's the date Fisker promises to start rolling its gorgeous PHEV off assembly lines, with deliveries to the first humans to reserve one coming up in April. The price for the 2012 Karma remains a mighty $95,900, though if you ask our brethren over at Autoblog, that's a bunch of pennies well spent. Fisker expects to start producing 1,500 Karmas per month starting in October and to then sell 15,000 a year from 2012 onwards.

How to change the screen time-out on Android

android
This week's tips series was all about Android, highlighting some the operating system's built-in utilities, and better ways of getting stuff done. For other technology tips, check our Tips index.

Earlier today, I was helping my brother set up his new Motorola Defy. While the phone itself was quite nice (and tough), the screen kept turning off after just a few seconds of idle time. It was starting to drive us crazy, but after quickly poking through the settings we fixed it. Here's how:

1) Go to Settings > Display

2) Tap Screen timeout

3) Tap the timeout value you wish to use

Of course there's a trade-off between convenience and battery life - having the screen time out after two whole minutes can be nice, but your battery may not last very long. And while you're here, you can also easily adjust your display's brightness.

This tip wraps up this week's Tips series. What would you like to see next week? Let me know in the comments!

HTC Freestyle for AT&T hands-on

Last time we checked in with the Freestyle back at CES, we couldn't turn it on -- but things are a little different here at our luxe meetup in San Francisco this evening. Honestly, the phone looks and feels great, doing a great job hiding its Brew MP-based, not-quite-smartphone underpinnings; pricing is still a concern, but the month-to-month dumbphone data is a bonus, and you've still got a full HTML browser plus a capacitive display at your disposal. Check shots below -- video after the break!

Z-Type is a fun way to learn to touch type

z-type
If you're a skilled touch-typist, this time-waster isn't for you. But if you're just learning to touch-type (or have recently switched to a superior layout), Z-Type might prove a nice way to practice your typing skills while having a bit of fun.

It's a basic shooter game: Spaceships come at you from the top, and you need to shoot and destroy them before they hit the bottom and destroy you. You do the shooting by typing the words associated with the baddies: Each spaceship has one word, and every letter sends a shot aimed at it. Once you finish typing the word, the ship explodes.

The graphics are very nice, and when you're done with the game it shows you your score and accuracy. The only thing I didn't like about this game is that it wouldn't let me set the speed, and it seems to be aimed at novice typists. If I could just select the level of difficulty before starting to play, I suspect it would have been much more engaging.

Still, for novice typists it's a great little way to practice!

Tech Weekly podcast: Twitter restricts app access, Apple and Google's subscription plans, Tablets and MeeGo from MWC

Aleks Krotoski and Jemima Kiss talk through this week's biggest tech headlines, discussing the buoyant future for the digital scene.

Twitter's heavy-handed action against the developers of the UberTwitter and Twidroyd apps suggests a shakedown from the top of the pile, as the company transforms from one service among many into a platform courted by Facebook and Google.

Social games company Zynga is on the verge of a big investment deal, suggesting that their diversification model ? from games to merchandise, to virtual goods to advertising ? is the next evolution of companies eager to surf the Web 2.0 bubble. And Apple and Google battle it out for the most robust subscription service that doesn't alienate consumers, stifle the fertile apps market or ? most importantly ? ostracise developers.

Charles Arthur rounds up the coverage from Mobile World Congress, including a chat with Stan Mo from MeeGo, intel's and Nokia's open operating system that had been the shining light, until Nokia announced last week that it was only packaging one piece of kit with it in the next financial year.

Samsung Galaxy S II gets very preliminary, expensive UK pricing

Don't go jumping off the Android sailboat just yet, these are very early numbers, but the Samsung Galaxy S II has been priced by a couple of UK retailers and the category they've placed it in is the distinctly high end. Expansys is listing £630 ($1,020) for the Gingerbread-sporting unlocked handset, while Play.com has it at £600 ($971) and is promising a March 31st release date. Even if you're zany enough to put the cash up for a pre-order today, do take note that Play was showing the cost at £650 (with £670 RRP) only yesterday, so pricing still seems to be fluctuating and finding its sweet spot. Whatever happens, with such a high starting point, we doubt the S II's price will be its most attractive attribute at launch.

Effing Meteors is a cataclysmic world-destroying physics Time Waster

effingmeteors
Remember Effing Hail? Well, Effing Meteors belongs to the same genre, but with a couple of interesting twists.

You're looking at a side-view of a planet, complete with its layers of atmosphere. Above the planet, in space, there are meteors. These are hurtling towards the planet, but they're often not large enough to survive entering through the atmosphere, so they burn along the way.

Your job is to destroy the planet; or more specifically, destroy all living organisms on a given planet. You can do this because your cursor generates a gravity field. So you click one meteorite and hold; soon, that single meteorite starts attracting other meteorites in its vicinity and grows into something larger - a planetoid. Now when you smash that into the planet's surface, it does survive the atmosphere and generates quite a shock - perhaps even enough to destroy the population of that planet.

Once you destroy a planet, it simply "revolves", revealing a new planet. Each planet is different: Some planets shoot back; and there's a planet with dinosaurs that run away from you, and then flying saucers enter the picture and it all gets a bit hard to explain.

Bottom line: This is a really fun game, with innovative graphics. And sometimes you can win a level by simply doing nothing!

'Apple just f***** over online music subs for the iPhone' -- Last.fm co-founder on Apple's 30% cut

Speaking rather frankly on IRC, Last.fm's co-founder Richard Jones has condemned Apple's move to grab 30% of content-based subscription fees: "Apple just f***** over online music subs for the iPhone."

Jones' apoplectic outburst is just one of many, too. Rhapsody yesterday said it won't bow to Apple's subscription policy, and CEO of on-demand music streamer we7, speaking to paidContent, thinks that the 30% share "makes music subscriptions economically unviable." If big-hitters like Spotify and Rdio can't produce the 30% that High Lord Jobs demands, how can they possibly continue to provide their services to iOS apps without increasing their price? The crazy thing is, because of Apple's price-matching ultimatum, everyone -- including users of other smartphone platforms -- will have to pay the higher price.

On another front entirely, according to some law professors quoted in the Wall Street Journal, Apple's move could even be kiboshed by antitrust and anticompetitive legislation. These could be interesting times indeed.

While leveraging its massive and wealthy userbase to get a slice of the subscription pie might've sounded great on paper, 30% might simply be too much to ask for. At the very least, it looks like Hulu, Netflix, Spotify, Last.fm and Rdio users are destined to pay a few dollars more per month. Or perhaps content providers will simply stick it to iOS and decamp to Google's dirty, bohemian app ecosystem.

AVG LiveKive to launch as Dropbox alternative

When you think of AVG, you probably think antivirus -- probably because it has sat near the top of Download.com's list of most downloaded apps for years. AVG has been tapped by tens of millions of users for malware protection, and the company now hopes those same people will turn to it for synchronized cloud storage.

Called AVG LiveKive, the new service will launch in beta form next week -- competing against apps like Dropbox, SugarSync, and SpiderOak. Users will get 5GB of storage for free and while we assume there will be paid options as well, AVG hasn't posted any details yet.

While AVG's post says users will be able to access LiveKive cloud data from "all their synced devices," it's not clear whether there will be mobile companion apps or if this is strictly a desktop app. AVG does already offer antivirus and backup apps for Android, so we expect to see LiveKive hit the Market as well.

SendGenie offers simple drag and drop file sharing for Windows and Mac

SendGenie is a slick new app (currently in open beta testing) which makes sharing files and photos as easy as dragging and dropping. Once installed, SendGenie adds a dropzone widget to your desktop which you can hide and unhide via the system tray icon. When you want to zap a file to a friend, just drag it onto the dropzone (yes, the wizard hat that you see above). Your file will be added to a send queue, and you can then choose the people you want to send the file (or files) to.

SendGenie also supports contact groups, so you can build a list for your department at work, your family, or your clan mates for easy mass sharing. You can also send clipboard contents -- like screenshots -- by tapping the Paste button in the main window and naming your clip. Once uploaded, your contacts will receive an email with a link to a page from where they can download your files. Friends running SendGenie on their desktop can choose to automatically receive files you send -- they'll appear in Documents\Me SendGenie\Your Email Address\Inbox\.

The app can optionally auto-resize photos you share, but there are no settings you can tweak. We'd like to see that option added before the final release, but SendGenie is still a very slick, easy-to-use desktop app for sharing files with your contacts.

Chrome Web Store opens to international devs

The Chrome Web Store has had somewhat limited developer access since its launch back in December of 2010. Soon, however, international developers will be able to submit Web apps for sale in Google's open-but-closed Web marketplace. Fifteen additional countries have been added to the developer dashboard, including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and the UK.

While international developer access is great, Chrome users in those countries aren't going to benefit from the expansion for some time. Google says the consumer launch isn't going to happen until later this year. Developers will also be able to price apps they want to sell via Chrome Web Store Payments (powered by Google Checkout), but won't actually be able to register for a merchant account yet.

Oh, what a tangled Web... Store!

Google Social Search gets more visible

Google has rolled out an update to its search results that will make your friends and contacts play a prominent role in what you see first. Google Social Search has been around since 2009 but has played a fairly minor supporting role until now. With the update, Google will use data from sources like Buzz, Reader, Twitter, Quora, and Flickr to position your personalized search results.

Presumably, if you want to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro and you're friends with Matt Cutts, and he's written about the climb, you'll want to see what he has to say about it. We'd certainly rather see results like this in our top ten than content farm spam -- which Google is also busy combating with its Personal Blocklist extension.

Google Bookmarks gets Delicious import, via staffer's undead script

When Yahoo announced it was ready to wash its hands of Delicious, panicked users began looking for alternative places to send their cloud bookmarks. Delicious, however, responded quickly and said there was nothing to worry about -- the service was still being maintained and your bookmarks didn't need to be rescued from a burning building.

Never ones to miss an opportunity, Google has finally decided to trumpet the availability of a Delicious to Google Bookmarks importer. You can now visit the page, pop in your credentials, and move everything quickly and painlessly.

Interestingly, Google probably could have been doing this since 2006 -- when one of its engineers posted an identical script on a personal site. Mihai Parparita resurrected his importer's code back in December, and it's his reanimated script that Google is now using -- just check out the side-by-side image after the break and see.

Mashable's Jolie O'Dell figures the move might be a way to grab more Google Bookmark users. We can't help thinking the whole process would make a whole lot more sense if there was a way to access Google Bookmarks natively in Chrome -- you know, the way we can access our synced ones.

Mockingbird is a fantastic in-browser tool for creating website wireframes

mockingbird
Sometimes you've got an idea in your head for a website or page layout, or even for an application. But then you need to somehow get it out of your head and actually look at it, or show it to someone. While drawing on the back of a napkin is a time-honored strategy, that is not always ideal because you can't edit your drawing later, and it may be difficult to share.

Mockingbird is like a digital version of the back of a napkin, but on steroids. It runs in-browser, and is powered by the magic of HTML5 (so it might work on an iPad). Mockingbird provides you with a rich toolbox of UI widgets like buttons, rectangles (both rounded and "regular") and image placeholders, as well as more Web-specific elements like a "search box" or vertical/horizontal navigation bars.

All you have to do is drag-and-drop the elements around the screen and resize them until it looks just right. I've tried it with one website mockup, and the result was pleasingly clear - it communicated exactly what I had in mind.

Mockingbird is a paid service (starting at $9/month) but you can use the tool itself even without an account - you just won't be able to save your work. That's not as bad as it sounds, because more often than not you may just want to relay a quick idea.

Switching to Mac? There's an app for that

For a limited time only, you can get your hands on Learn the Switch to Mac for just $0.99 -- from the Mac App Store, of course. The app is designed for simpleton Windows types that lack the requisite cranial capacity to understand the Macintosh's complex and mysterious user interface.

Learn the Switch to Mac is basically a series of screencast video tutorials that walk you through each of Mac OS X's features, from using Finder and iChat, through to setting up Time Machine and manipulating Spaces. You are guided by the disembodied head of Saied, your personal instructor, who for some reason isn't wearing a Jobsian black sweater. To aid with the switching, Saied first focuses on the similarities and differences between Windows and Mac, and then pushes on with Mac-specific features.

For the sheer number of video tutorials that the app includes, it's surely worth 99 cents. Whether you're a new Macite looking for enlightenment, or you're holding the hand of a new convert, just buy it -- what've you got to lose?

Incidentally, according to TUAW, the price will eventually rise to $24.95, though there's no details of when the increase will actually occur. There's a video of Learn the Switch to Mac after the break.

Tech Weekly podcast: Nokia's alliance with Microsoft and the Guardian's SXSW hack

Aleks Krotoski is joined by Vic Keegan, former editor of the Guardian's Technology section and developer of iPhone apps City Poems and Shakespeare's London, to discuss the latest coming from the "burning platform" at Nokia. The merger, announced this week, between the mobile phone hardware manufacturer and the software developer has caused heatwaves throughout the technology industry, with pundits asking if this really was the big decision that Nokia CEO Stephen Elop needed to take to save the company.

Rewired State's Adam McGreggor and the Guardian's Robbie Clutton join Vic and Aleks to talk through the results of last weekend's Guardian SXSW Hack, which saw a meeting of the minds between journalists and technologists. The 80-strong group worked through Saturday night to produce apps that hacks can use to cover news events, such as the SXSW conference. But what happens at these events? Aleks and Jemima Kiss report back after the dust has settled.

AT&T's HTC Inspire 4G can do HSUPA, has it disabled for some mysterious reason

There's a story going around the past couple days that HTC's Inspire 4G for AT&T -- a phone that you would assume to be wicked fast on both uploads and downloads in light of the name -- doesn't support HSUPA, a critical element to offering reasonable uplink speeds. Turns out it's not quite that simple. Here's what we're hearing from trusted sources:
  • Contrary to AT&T's official line -- which is flatly that the Inspire's specs don't include HSUPA -- the hardware most certainly does support it.
  • For some reason, HSUPA has been disabled in the current firmware, but could be easily enabled in a future update if HTC and AT&T were to agree to do so. For what it's worth, we're not even aware of an HSPA+ chipset that lacks support for HSUPA, so that definitely sounds right.
  • We've also been told that AT&T's network may simply have HSUPA disabled in 4G areas. That doesn't necessarily make sense since other HSUPA-compliant devices on AT&T (like the iPhone 4, to name an obvious example) can regularly hit HSUPA uplink speeds, but we suppose it's possible that there's some specific incompatibility between the infrastructure and the chipset used by the Inspire. An eerily-similar incident has happened in the past, after all.
We'll keep our ear to the ground as we get more on this situation, but the bottom line is that hope is not lost for heavy uploaders with Inspires -- we just need to find out what it's going to take to get HTC to push an update.

Hosted Microsoft OCS/Lync Provider Supports Direct SIP Trunking

workspace-communications-logo.jpg
Direct SIP trunking has existed since OCS 2007 R2, however, WorkSpace Communications claims to be the only hosted Microsoft OCS/Lync Provider to support direct SIP trunking in a "hosted" environment. Even the more recent version Microsoft Lync cannot do direct SIP trunking when using a hosted Lync provider. I stopped by their booth at ITEXPO where they told me that Microsoft said it would be near impossible to offer direct SIP trunking in a hosted scenario. Well, they figured it out and are now applying for a patent.

Currently, WorkSpace Communications is hosting OCS 2007 R2, but Lync support will be released very shortly. They can host soup-to-nuts, including Microsoft Exchange email, Microsoft OCS/Lync with IM, audio, video, and web conferencing and SharePoint. They also offer PSTN termination using the Lync client at I believe they said was 4.9 cents/minute. You can also order à la carte which services you require, but for the full soup-to-nuts it's only $65/user per month. Not a bad price to get a fully hosted unified communications (UC) offering.
